Celebrating Local Trailblazers

March is Women's History Month.  We're heard about many noteworthy women in recent weeks, but I was especially proud to recognize and celebrate the lives of two local trailblazers on the House floor: Yvette Monroe and Virginia Onley.

Yvette Monroe was the first Black person (female or male) to serve on the Gaithersburg City Council.  Virginia Onley was the first Black woman to serve on the Rockville City Council.

They shattered the glass ceiling with their public service and blazed the trail for others to serve after them: Mayor Monique Ashton, Councilmember Izola Shaw, Councilmember Lisa Henderson, and former City Councilmember and current County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles.
